What are roof truss clips?
Roof truss clips are metal components that are designed to safely and strongly fit roof trusses to wall plates. This resists wind uplift on the roof truss which avoids any damage by skew nailing.
How big are roof truss clips?
Roof truss clips generally come in two different sizes, 38mm and 50mm. The most suitable size clip to use will depend on the size of the timber used to make the trusses. It is best to speak to your truss provider to make sure that you have the correct size clips. They can advise you further.
How much do roof truss clips cost?
Most often, roof truss clips are included in your overall quote. However, should you need to buy these, you would be looking at a cost of around 25-40p per clip – a very minimal cost. This is a small price to pay to ensure your designs are validated and safe.
How are roof truss clips fitted?
Two clips are used per roof truss. One is placed on either side, where the truss is fixed to the wall plate. Usually, the roof truss clip is installed on the inside wall plate. However, you can also fit these on the outside wall plate if the detail of the truss heel allows.
A truss clip should always be fitted vertically to a wall plate, never lying flat or horizontally. You must make use of every hole on the face of the roof truss clip, and nail all of these in. Some installers may only use four of the thirteen holes which are on the clip – this is not utilising the strength of the clip fully.
Is there anything else I can use instead of roof truss clips?
If you are securing more than one roof truss, then you will need to use framing anchors. This is because roof truss clips are limited to being 38 or 50mm. If dealing with a set of two, three, or 4 trusses, then framing anchors can go either side of the truss at either end of the wall plate. Framing anchors, similarly to truss clips, provide a secure fixing.
If you have chosen to use a scissor truss or a raised tie roof truss, then it is recommended you use slide shoes (glide slides) instead of the framing anchors or roof truss clips.
What are slide shoes?
Slide shoes are similar to clips and framing anchors, and are fitted to the wall plate on either end of a roof truss to restrict horizontal movement. A standard roof truss design will have the ceiling chord coming directly out the wall plate, but raised tie and scissor trusses have a higher ceiling cord, giving extra space from the wall plate, so a shoe slide is needed.
